TRADITIONAL MONTERIA
The Monteria (or Spanish driven hunt) is one of the most traditional hunting modalities in Spain. On this, a group about 20-25 hunters are spread over a hunting area while the dogs and their dog keepers beat the terrain trying to push all the game towards the hunters, shooting the trophies according to their individual quota.
THE HUNT
Despite the driven hunts are also found in some other countries in Europe, there are some characteristics that make the Spanish ones unique. As the main one, in Spain only one drive is organized a day, so the hunters hold the same spot for all the hunting day. This spot is chosen through a lottery organized in the morning just before going hunting. In this way, only the hazard determines the quality of the spot. Normally, the Monteria is organized for 2/3 consecutive days (depending on the size of the area), so the lottery will be done as many days as the event takes place. The event typically involves the most traditional food a strong comradely spirit.
MANAGEMENT TOOL
The Monteria is a great way of management that the landowners use to control the game populations in their areas. Normally, beyond the Monteria, not any other hunting event is organized, so all the game stays relaxed for all year round. Depending on the owner interests, the available hunting species or the quotas may change. So, sometimes it is possible to shoot unlimited trophies (normally when the population is extremely high or a blood renovation is needed) or, others, the hunters can harvest a certain number of trophies (normally when the population is stable but only harvesting the oldest trophies is pretended). Depending on the hunters and the landowners interest, we organize the hunts in one or another hunting area.
